Spain’s GGR Reaches 28.4% With a Dominance of Casino Gambling
Chris Grand |Gambling is a popular and very common pastime activity in Spain and recent numbers back this claim. Across 2023, the country’s gambling market managed to grow by 28.4%. The casino activity made up more than half of Spain’s gross gaming revenue, which reached €1.2 billion.
The Massive Growth of Spain’s GGR
The casino segment in Spain is worth around €624.8 million. Year-on-year it grew 25.3% where slots gained increasingly bigger market shares in casino gaming activity since their initial launch in 2015. This data comes from the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ).
In this regulator’s report, it noted that slot games made up 61.6% of the entire casino segment. This is an increase of 28.1% year-on-year.
Another gambling segment that is on the rise in Spain is sports betting. This type of gambling had its share of GGR increased by 36.6% year-on-year. Now, it accounts for 39.8% of the total GGR in the country.

DGOJ noted that the growth in GGR comes as a result of in-play betting. This type of betting increased by 48.7% while pre-match betting went up by 15.3%. Additionally, the regulator stated that other types of fixed-odds have also increased in 2023 by 191.9%.
Yet another segment that was on the rise in 2023 in Spain was poker. During this period, the poker segment was worth 8.5% of the market, or €115.3 million. The regulator said that the revenue here managed to go up by 16.9%.
Another data provided by the DGOJ concerns the monthly average of active game accounts. This average was 1.16 million, which is an increase of 9.8% year-on-year.
While the monthly average new game accounts went down by 1%, the deposits and withdrawals went the opposite way. Deposits increased by 15.5% while withdrawals rose by 10.1%.
