Phantom Curse slot - Free Play - Game Review
Phantom Curse is a new game from NetEnt, tied release-wise with Microgaming’s hugely-popular “Phantom of the Opera” slot, and while this drew some criticism from critics, as a whole the game’s gone done relatively well, and within this review, we’ll be taking a look at what makes the game so enjoyable for players, and how you can begin to enjoy it for yourself from the comfort of your computer, laptop, or mobile device.
The game itself is a 5-reel 40-pay-line slot which can be played from as little as 40p per spin, and the maximum spin amount – dependant on which casino you choose to play it at – can reach as high as £200.
The game benefits from a number of different features and bonuses, and you’ll see the masked phantom re-spin feature, the stacked phantom re-spin feature, and the wild random feature. We’ll cover those in more depth a little later on within this post.
The general theme of the slot is based – of course – around Phantom of the Opera, a popular opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber – and you’ll see this theme depicted within the slot’s gameplay through a number of factors.
The first is the symbols on the reels themselves. You won’t see any traditional playing card symbols, including Ten, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace, with the game opting – instead – to use symbols like Hearts, Clubs, Spades, Diamonds, Daggers, Hand Mirrors, Yellow Roses, Sapphire Rings, along with a couple of characters from the opera; Christine and the Phantom himself.
Of course, the Phantom symbol is the higher-paying symbol on the reels, and if you manage to land this you’ll be in for a massive win!
There are a couple of features to be aware of during the gameplay, and the first is the "Pick Me Bonus”, which is triggered whenever the Phantom symbol lands fully on the first reel, and the Christine symbol lands fully on the fifth reel.
You then enter the bonus-round, where you can win cash prizes, multipliers, and even entry to the main free-spins feature.
There’s then the Masked Phantom Re-Spin bonus, which is triggered by landing a stacked Phantom symbol on the first reel, and a stacked Mask Symbol on the fifth reel. These symbols will then turn wild, and a re-spin is awarded. Any further mask symbol that land also turn into wilds, and a further re-spin is then awarded; this continues until you no longer get a win.
The final – and most desirable feature – is the free-spins bonus-round, which is triggered by landing three scatter symbols on reels one three and five. Once you do, you’ll win unlimited free-spins, with these continuing until a masked phantom symbol lands on all of the five reels.
Pros: Phantom’s Curse offers something very different from games we’ve seen from NetEnt in the past, and it’s no surprise that it’s become such a popular, hit-game with players.
Cons: The bonuses are quite hard to trigger, so bear this in mind if you’re hoping to find a regularly-bonusing game.
